![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Goldfish have expanded their line over the years to include flavor-blasted and goldfish grahams. It wasn’t until 1997 that the smiles were added for a little change in the cracker (so now they’re happy they’re getting eaten?). When Pepperidge Farms founder Margaret Rudkin visited Europe in the 1960s, she was so enamored by the adorable crackers that she brought them back to the United States. The result were lucky, golden fish-crackers that he called Goldfish. The story goes that he wanted to make a birthday present for his wife, who was a Pisces (whose symbol is fish). The first Goldfish crackers were made in Switzerland in 1958 by a biscuit-maker. But in most cases, a cat would be fine if he consumed a couple of Goldfish crackers. However, in general, snacks like Goldfish crackers are not something you should feed your cat in huge quantities or daily. The inspiration for the fish shape, oddly enough, comes from astrology. Goldfish crackers do pose the risk of an allergic reaction, and they don’t provide any kitty-nutrients. You would think that with fish-shaped cracker would be used as such because they could swim through the soup-but no! Pepperidge Farms claims that they’re simply similar in flavor and texture to soda and oyster crackers, which are typically eaten in soup. Photo CreditL Image courtesy of Allison Speigel ![]()
